ONE HECK OF A RIDE: Wake Forest 2006 Football Championship Season | Wake Forest

ONE HECK OF A RIDE: Wake Forest 2006 Football Championship Season

ONE HECK OF A RIDE: Wake Forest 2006 Football Championship Season

Description: Wake Forest is a school where football is usually just a diversion before basketball season. 2006 wasn_t supposed to be any different. The Demon Deacons were picked to finish last in their division. Bad luck came early. Their starting quarterback broke his arm in the first game. His substitute was Riley Skinner, a redshirt freshman who had never taken a college snap. Yet they won that one, and the next and the next. Until they were 5-0. Even then people said it was all a fluke. Finally when the Deacons fell apart against Clemson in game six, the experts shook their heads and said the dream was over. Nothing personal. Just Wake Forest football. It wasn_t over, however the rookie quarterback and his team would win five of their next six, and find themselves in the ACC Championship game against Georgia Tech. There, they relied on tough defense and three field goals to become the first North Carolina school to win an ACC championship football game. Next up: A BCS matchup in the Orange Bowl against the Louisville Cardinals. Before a national audience, the Deacons hung tough before losing in the last quarter. Leading the team was Coach Jim Grobe. He rarely smiles. Holds open practices. Says what he means. He knows wins don_t have to be pretty. They just have to be wins. He was named ACC and National Coach of the Year. People characterized the Wake team as a bunch of good kids. They go to classes. They help out. They_re leaders. When the Demon Deacons entered the fourth quarter against Louisville, the score was tied at 10- 10. The crowd then did an amazing thing. Everybody held up five fingers, a tribute started this season by linebacker Jon Abbate to honor the memory of his little brother, who died in a car accident last year. For a brief moment, the score didn_t matter. Through powerful photos and stories and columns from the Winston- Salem Journal, One Heck of A Ride tells the story of a football team that played with heart, ignored the doubters, and dared to dream.
