College mascots are the unsung heroes of college sports. A mascot is the extended identity of a college especially in the field of sports where they encourage school loyalty and embody the true spirit of the college. Mascots traditionally have been the Rodney Dangerfields, but that has changed drastically. In fact, mascots are now a part of colleges, that contests are now being held annually to pay homage to top college mascots such as the All America Mascot and National Mascot of the Year contests. The word “mascot” suggests a connection with the occult, being derived from the French slang, “mascotte”, which means witch. The use of mascots goes way back to antiquity. However, they were not always called mascots. Some ate mascots as far back as pre-history. Man has always been fascinated by the abilities of the different animals – their speed, intelligence, strength and other unique abilities. It was this fascination that let to the use of these animals as tribal symbols. It was early man’s belief that communing with these animals enables humans to obtain some of the characteristics of these animals through magic. They used the likeliness of these animals in both costumes and ceremonies to bring them good fortune during battle, for a bountiful harvest, to protect them against misfortune, to heal the sick, or to provide bad fortune to their enemies. In fact, some of these early people’s gods were mascots! The evidences can sometimes still be found in the caves and places in different parts of the world where the earliest man dwelt.
